Preventing Violence
The Nebraska Coalition engages in a variety of efforts to prevent violence before it occurs in the first place. This work involves advocating for public policy, coordinating statewide community development efforts, and supporting network programs in implementing local prevention programs. A signature way the Nebraska Coalition supports network programs is through the Rape Prevention & Education Project, funded by the Center for Disease Control.
Our Prevention Priorities
The Nebraska Coalition completed an internal assessment on its ability to lead primary sexual violence prevention and health equity efforts across the state. With support from consultants, the Nebraska Coalition conducted surveys and hosted focus group discussions with individuals working at the Nebraska Coalition, network programs, and community partner organizations. Using the findings from the assessment, the Nebraska Coalition identified a number of prevention priorities including organizational resources, data, services, and partnerships.
-
PARTNERSHIPS
The Nebraska Coalition needs to engage more diverse partners in its prevention work, including partners who are not traditionally engaged in the anti-violence movement and partners in rural areas of the state.
The Nebraska Coalition will identify, engage, and collaborate with more diverse partners in its prevention work, and invest more time and resources into building and sustaining these relationships. Building partnerships and openly and effectively communicating with partners will be a significant focus of the prevention and community development team in the coming year.
-
SERVICES
Partners most often reach out to the Nebraska Coalition to request or participate in Nebraska Coalition-hosted training (77%) or to request information and resources (86%). Far fewer partners accessed Nebraska Coalition services related to building and promoting systems change to end gender-based violence in their communities or public policy advocacy (30%) or individualized technical assistance (28%).
The prevention and community development team will expand its services to engage and support partners throughout their prevention strategies in a variety of ways. The Nebraska Coalition will advertise its prevention services to the community at large.
-
DATA
Nebraska needs comprehensive sexual violence and health equity data that is paid for, supported, and shared by statewide partners to guide and evaluate the impact of this work across the state.
The Nebraska Coalition will develop processes to gather and analyze data to drive decisions on its prevention priorities, resources, and staffing, and to evaluate its prevention work. The Nebraska Coalition will also support its network programs in implementing these efforts at the local level. The Nebraska Coalition will contract with a consultant to guide and evaluate its prevention work, as well as build relationships with partners across the state to explore potential future data sharing initiatives and projects.
-
ORGANIZATIONAL RESOURCES
Lack of funding, data, and people power impacts the Nebraska Coalition's ability to make and grow partnerships in prevention work.
The Nebraska Coalition will increase its efforts to expand organizational resources to implement prevention strategies across the state and work with network programs to secure adequate funding, data, and people power at the local level. Additionally, the Nebraska Coalition will increase staff knowledge and skill around the community and social factors that impact prevention, mobilizing partners to action, creating messaging and advocating for prevention, so more Nebraska Coalition staff are able to engage in prevention work.
